International Conference: “Migration from, to and within Europe: Economic and Social Opportunities and Costs” - Call for Papers
Data Inizio: 28/02/2019 Data Fine: 28/02/2019
University of Bologna - Forlì Campus
June 19-20-21, 2019

This conference will address a variety of migration issues in Europe. As concerns the economic opportunities provided by incoming migrants to their host countries throughout history, participants are requested to cover immigrants’ contribution to filling job vacancies, providing services to an ageing population, and reducing the pension gap. As to social opportunities, participants should emphasize the role played by education prospects in migratory projects, especially in favour of immigrant children.
Prospective speakers are encouraged to present papers on the history of immigrant groups that compete more successfully in business and express high levels of entrepreneurship and self-employment. Ethnic ventures often rely on social networks to access information and resources and achieve the legitimacy required to overcome their shortcomings. Ethnic entrepreneurs are risk-takers but also capable of dealing with the intricate link among organizational learning, social networks and destination countries’ rules. Furthermore, different ethnic groups vary in their likelihood of engaging in the entrepreneurial process; such differences may be a function of ethnicity per se or an outcome of the complex interplay of social, economic and institutional processes known as “mixed embeddedness”.
Finally, if immigration can be economically beneficial for host countries, in terms of new labour force inputs and entrepreneurial forces, migrants also feed social, economic and cultural pressures that need to be taken into account in planning for future policies and welfare services. Papers addressing these concerns are welcome, for the latter pose a vital challenge and crucially influence the success of second generations’ integration prospects.
The conference will be held in English in order to allow participation of international scholars and researchers and enhance its visibility and results. The ultimate aim of the conference is to improve understanding of the effect that different forms of migration have had and will continue to exert on economic and social change in receiving countries.
There is no conference fee; participation costs are borne individually, but travel allowances for doctoral students and presenters coming from abroad may be available in limited amounts and upon presentation of the whole paper. The welcome dinner and work lunches are provided by the organizers.
If you wish to submit a presentation please send – no later than February 25, 2019 – an abstract (maximum 500 words) and a short biographical note to: francesca.fauri@unibo.it
